HUD is giving out a record number of housing vouchers, but part of the issue is getting landlords to accept them. What would you say to landlords who may be hesitant to accept Section 8 or might look at it a little differently than regular income? I think every landlord should do their own due diligence when it comes to checking out the individual’s background. People who are on Section 8 are not commanding the highest paying jobs, but they are some of the hardest working people. They know that they must also pay their portion to remain in the program. So, taking a chance on a woman who may have two kids who just needs this for the time being is giving those children a chance to have safe housing or even someone who is just trying to get back on their feet, I think that’s something that needs to be considered.
Deep down in my heart I know that there are a lot of people like myself who just need the correct housing, the correct amount of food and nutrition to be able to contribute back to society. Section 8 can save lives. Do you have any closing comments before I let you go? Society very much frowns upon you if you are socioeconomically underprivileged. And if you are also a person of color in that kind of situation, that seems to trap you in the cycle of poverty. If more people could just say, “I do want to try to provide opportunity. I do want to try to provide a steppingstone up.” that could make a difference. It’s not like everyone wants to brag about being on Section 8. It’s a means to an end or at least it should be in my mind. If you can take those “handouts” and prove those people wrong, that’s one of the coolest things I think there is.
