BED BUGS, ROACHES, TERMITES AND OTHER THINGS THAT BUG YOU Pests are one of those issues that can quietly escalate into expensive problems for landlords. In a recent Washington, D.C. case, a landlord was ordered to pay $41 million after more than 1,000 tenants endured years of unsafe living conditions, including persistent pest infestations. The court found the problems were known and ignored. Bed bugs, roaches, termites and other unwelcome visitors don’t just affect one unit. They spread, cause damage, and quickly turn into tenant complaints and costly repairs. The good news is that most infestations are preventable when landlords and residents understand how these pests get in and what attracts them in the first place.
